When AI expert and investigative journalist Karen Hao first began covering OpenAI in 2019, she thought they were the good guys. Founded as a nonprofit with safety enshrined as its core mission, the organization was meant, its leader Sam Altman told us, to act as a check against more purely mercantile, and potentially dangerous, forces. What could go wrong?
Over time, Hao began to wrestle ever more deeply with that question. Increasingly, she realized that the core truth of this massively disruptive sector is that its vision of success requires an almost unprecedented amount of resources: the “compute” power of high-end chips and the processing capacity to create massive large language models, the sheer volume of data that needs to be amassed at scale, the humans “cleaning up” that data for sweatshop wages throughout the Global South, and a truly alarming spike in the usage of energy and water underlying it all. The truth is that we have entered a new and ominous age of empire: only a small handful of globally scaled companies can even enter the field of play. At the head of the pack with its ChatGPT breakthrough, how would OpenAI resist such temptations?

1. What Teachers Should Know About ChatGPT’s New Study Mode Feature
OpenAI has introduced a new “study mode” feature in ChatGPT aimed at transforming the tool from a simple answer generator into a personal tutor that fosters deeper learning. Instead of providing direct answers, study mode guides students step by step with interactive prompts, scaffolded responses, quizzes, and open-ended questions to encourage active engagement and understanding. Developed with input from educators and cognitive scientists, the feature is designed for both college and high school students and is available on all versions of ChatGPT. While it holds promise for homework help and personalized learning, educators are encouraged to explore the tool themselves to understand its strengths and limitations. Some concerns remain about AI accuracy and age appropriateness, but the feature marks a significant step in aligning AI use with educational goals. |

2. Canadian teachers yearn for guidance, instruction as AI infiltrates classrooms
https://www.cbc.ca/ | August 04, 2025
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education, Canadian teachers are calling for clearer guidance and support. Educators like Jamie Mitchell and Tamara Phillips express concern over the lack of national policies and training on AI use in classrooms, especially as AI tools like ChatGPT become more common. While U.S. teachers are receiving substantial support through initiatives backed by major tech companies, Canadian educators face a fragmented landscape, with inconsistent provincial guidelines and limited resources. Experts warn that without proper training, teachers may feel displaced or uncertain about their roles. They also raise concerns about tech companies leading AI education, urging for teacher-led, ethically grounded training instead. Despite the challenges, some educators are finding ways to incorporate AI positively, teaching students how to use it as a supplemental learning tool while emphasizing ethical use and academic integrity. |

3. White House Announces The Presidential AI Challenge, National Competition For K-12 Students, Educators, Mentors, And Community Teams Develop AI-Powered Solutions for local, Real-World Problems
https://www.ai.gov/ | August 04, 2025
The Presidential AI Challenge is a national initiative designed to inspire students and educators to develop AI-powered solutions to local, state, and regional challenges, fostering innovation and advancing America’s “Golden Age.” Open to participants of all backgrounds and skill levels, the challenge aims to build AI interest, competency, and responsible use among youth, preparing them for an AI-assisted future workforce. Students will create projects that apply AI methods or tools to address community needs, while educators will design innovative approaches to teaching or integrating AI in K-12 classrooms. This effort celebrates America’s 250th anniversary by igniting a renewed spirit of scientific progress, creativity, and economic growth. |

The article “Reimagining Learning in the Age of AI: A Culture of Yes” argues that artificial intelligence is no longer a question of if but how it should shape education, emphasizing both its opportunities and risks. The author stresses that while AI can amplify wisdom, personalize learning, promote equity, and free teachers to focus on relationships, it must be integrated thoughtfully to avoid reinforcing inequities or undermining human connection. Central to this vision is a “Culture of Yes”, embracing curiosity, collaboration, and experimentation while keeping humanity at the core. The piece calls for shifting education from rote memorization to meaning-making, equipping students as creators rather than passive consumers, building AI literacy that includes ethical and critical reflection, and allowing teacher-led innovation rather than top-down mandates. Ultimately, the article encourages schools to embrace AI’s potential while ensuring it serves human flourishing, positioning education as a balance of technological progress and deeply human values. |

5. Let's Talk Science's "Inspire. Educate. Innovate." Campaign Surpasses $25 Million, Fueling Canada's Future Leaders
Let’s Talk Science, a national education charity dedicated to empowering Canadian youth through STEM, has surpassed $25 million in its “Inspire. Educate. Innovate.” campaign, just $5 million shy of its $30 million goal. This milestone marks over 30 years of impact, supporting free, bilingual STEM programs that foster critical skills like digital literacy, problem-solving, and innovation in youth from Early Years to Grade 12. With a vast volunteer network of nearly 2,000 post-secondary students and 55 outreach sites, the organization cultivates a culture of curiosity, leadership, and resilience. The campaign’s success underscores broad support for preparing Canada’s next generation to tackle future global challenges. |

Queen’s Law Professor Samuel Dahan is leading the OpenJustice initiative, a groundbreaking AI platform designed to make legal tools more reliable, customizable, and accessible for lawyers and legal aid providers. Backed by over $1.3 million in funding from NSERC, SSHRC, Mitacs, and industry partners, OpenJustice was developed by the Conflict Analytics Lab to address key challenges in legal AI, such as high hallucination rates, lack of legal reasoning, and limited customization. Trained on legal systems from Canada, the U.S., and France, the platform became open source in February 2025, enabling legal professionals to build and refine models without coding. With support from law firms, tech companies like Deel, and academic institutions including Stanford and McGill, OpenJustice aims to expand access to justice and reduce legal costs globally, especially for small practices and underserved communities. |

9. Artificial Intelligence and Academic Professions
Educational technology, or ed-tech, including artificial intelligence (AI), continues to become more integrated into teaching and research in higher education, with minimal oversight. The AAUP’s ad hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Academic Professions, composed of higher education faculty members, staff, and scholars interested in technology and its impact on academic labor, was formed under the assumption that faculty members are best positioned to understand and improve teaching and learning conditions, including the development and implementation of institutional policies around educational technology. |

Google announced a major education initiative to give college students free access to its most advanced AI tools, including Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, and a new Guided Learning mode designed to deepen understanding rather than just provide answers. Starting in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil, eligible students can sign up for a free 12-month Google AI Pro plan, which also includes enhanced research tools, coding support, and 2 TB of storage. Alongside this, Google is investing $1 billion over three years to support AI education, research, and job training in the U.S. through its AI for Education Accelerator, offering free AI training and Google Career Certificates to all college students, with over 100 universities already participating. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that this initiative builds on Google’s longstanding mission to make technology widely accessible and aims to prepare students, today’s “AI natives”, to thrive in the workforce and shape the future of AI. |
