The 16th Canadian EdTech Leadership AI Summit
“I have a four word message, Build your own tools. I think that is where we need to go, not only as universities as colleges as school boards or as businesses, we need to be building more, please lets not be consumers, even if we are enlightened consumers, we are still consumers, we are very innovative, Professor Hinton was very innovative in developing those models for us, but let’s find a way to translate them into very concrete tools, and most importantly make them tools so that we can create new companies, new organizations and actually grow the business and hire people to work for us, id like to see us create an industry in Canada, industry industry industry in my code word for what we do.”

1. Surrey School Board sees $33M surplus, earmarked for new computer systems
https://www.cbc.ca/news| September 19, 2025
The Surrey School Board reported a $33-million surplus from the 2024–25 school year, with $21 million earmarked for long-needed computer system upgrades and $12 million set aside as a rainy day fund. Board chair Gary Tymoschuk emphasized that while the surplus meets provincial reserve requirements, it cannot be used to reinstate the $16 million in programs cut for the 2025–26 budget, such as Grade 7 band and educational assistant staffing, since the funding would not be sustainable. Teachers and parents argue that frontline classrooms need immediate support, citing under-resourced schools and growing demands on parent councils to fill gaps. With student enrolment lower than expected and continued capacity issues, both board leaders and advocates are calling on the province for a stronger, more stable funding model. |

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how students and teachers approach learning, but much of the knowledge-sharing still happens informally through social media or peer networks. A study at Mount Saint Vincent University showed that structured teacher education helps move beyond casual use toward critical engagement, equipping future educators with the skills to evaluate bias, ethics, and pedagogy. While policies on AI remain inconsistent across universities, the research highlights the need for clear frameworks and equity-focused practices to guide adoption. Ultimately, embedding AI literacy into teacher training can ensure educators shape technology responsibly, fostering trust, equity, and thoughtful classroom use. |

3. Back to school boost: Government of Canada invests $26.1 Million in education and job supports for youth
https://www.canada.ca/ | September 2, 2025
The Government of Canada has announced $26.1 million in new funding for six national projects under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), aimed at improving youth employment outcomes and supporting career development. Alongside these projects, temporary increases to Canada Student Financial Assistance grants and loans have been extended for the 2025–26 academic year to make education more affordable. The initiatives include enhanced support for students with disabilities, expanded loan forgiveness for health and social service professionals in rural and remote areas, and tools to help employers better integrate young workers. Altogether, these programs are expected to create 162,000 opportunities for youth, helping them gain skills, reduce debt, and prepare for Canada’s evolving workforce. |
A new survey from SETDA, representing U.S. state educational technology leaders, shows that artificial intelligence has become the top edtech priority for K–12 schools for the first time, surpassing cybersecurity. Education leaders across 47 states report working on AI guidance, professional development, and policy frameworks to ensure responsible use while maintaining focus on equity and student protection. The survey also highlights ongoing challenges such as classroom device use, the need for continued infrastructure investment in cybersecurity, and greater teacher training in safe AI adoption. SETDA’s findings signal a significant shift in how states are shaping long-term education technology strategies to balance innovation with responsibility. |
AI is rapidly changing how students and teachers approach learning, but much of the knowledge exchange still happens informally through social media or peer networks. Research shows many educators lack the training to critically assess AI’s reliability and ethics, risking bias and inequity if adoption remains unstructured. A pilot program at Mount Saint Vincent University demonstrated that structured teacher education can help candidates evaluate tools, understand concepts like algorithmic bias, and integrate AI thoughtfully into pedagogy. The article argues that clear policies, equity-focused practices, and embedding AI literacy into teacher training are essential if AI is to enhance, not undermine education. |

6. Testing Times: Fending off a crisis in Canadian postsecondary education
https://www.rbc.com/ | September 16, 2025 |
RBC’s latest Growth Project report warns that Canada’s post-secondary sector is in crisis, facing financial instability, declining public funding, and shrinking responsiveness to labour market needs. Once a global leader, Canadian institutions are now struggling with reduced government investment, heavy reliance on international student tuition, and widespread program cuts. The report outlines five urgent reforms: new funding arrangements, more responsive institutional mandates, modernized programs and lifelong learning services, updated governance structures, and mission-driven research tied to national priorities. Without these changes, RBC argues, colleges and universities risk obsolescence, leaving Canada without the skilled workforce and innovation needed to drive future economic growth. |

7. These Sask. university students say AI is reshaping their educations and job outlook
https://www.cbc.ca/ | September 11, 2025 |
At the University of Regina, students are grappling with how artificial intelligence is reshaping education and their career prospects. Some, like French education student Jessica Yoganand, worry that over-reliance on AI undermines the value of a degree and complicates academic integrity, while others, like software engineering student Parth Patel, see it as a powerful career opportunity and are building their own AI tools. Opinions vary widely: some students believe banning AI promotes deeper critical thinking, while others view it as a helpful tool for organization and brainstorming if used responsibly. Overall, the conversations highlight a generational shift, with students balancing excitement, skepticism, and ethical concerns as AI becomes embedded in learning and future work. |

Ivey Business School is pioneering the use of virtual reality to help students build empathy and perspective-taking skills, essential but often overlooked aspects of leadership. Led by Professor Shannon Rawski and supported by Ivey’s Critical Issues Challenge Fund, the project immerses students in real-life inspired team meeting scenarios, allowing them to experience situations from multiple viewpoints. The three-minute VR simulation highlights issues such as prejudice, racism, and classism, encouraging students to reflect and engage in deeper discussions after the experience. Early pilots, including with Women in Asset Management students, have received positive feedback, signaling VR’s potential to transform leadership education at Ivey. |

9. Ontario Investing $18 Million to Boost Life-Saving Medical Isotope Production at McMaster University
https://news.ontario.ca/ | September 15 , 2025 · |
The Ontario government is investing $18 million to expand life-saving medical isotope production at McMaster University’s Nuclear Reactor, enabling 24/7 operations and supporting up to 84,000 cancer treatments annually. The funding will create 16 new jobs in Hamilton, boost research capacity by 300 per cent, and strengthen Ontario’s position as a global leader in nuclear medicine and innovation. Medical isotopes produced at McMaster, such as Holmium-166 and Iodine-125, are critical for treating cancers including liver and prostate, with demand rising worldwide. This investment aligns with Ontario’s broader life sciences and nuclear strategies, aiming to save lives, grow the economy, and export made-in-Ontario medical innovations globally. |
