🎙️ Quote of the Week:
In a timely reminder about thoughtful AI adoption, Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, professor emeritus UofT, renowned as the “godfather of AI,” offers this sage advice:
“
A person using an AI can still do critical thinking… What universities (K12 School Districts) have to encourage is people to use AI well.”
A powerful call for balance and purpose as AI becomes embedded into everyday learning.

The classroom dilemma: how to use AI without killing critical thinking
"
A person using an AI can still do critical thinking, or they can try and dump everything on the AI, and that's terrible," he said. "What universities have to encourage is people to use AI well."

Education For Human Flourishing |
In the future, education systems should nurture a broader range of capabilities, help restore meaning to young people's lives and equip them with the skills and ambition to remake our societies, economies and organisations. To flourish over a lifetime, people will need to be adaptive problem solvers, ethically competent and able to understand, appreciate and act in the world. In the age of AI, education must strengthen human agency, human meaning and human security.
Since 2020, the OECD has been developing far-reaching ideas on the future purposes of education, based on policy dialogues with seven high performing PISA systems. The Human Capital model, which has shaped what students learn for many decades, prepares young people for yesterday's jobs, through cognitive examinations. Education for Human Flourishing will equip young people for lives of purpose and fulfilment.

1. Google's $30 Million Commitment to AI Education Enhances Learning Accessibility
https://blog.google/ | November 11, 2025
Google announced major new commitments to AI-driven learning at its AI for Learning Forum in London, including $30 million in funding for innovative education projects and expanded research on AI’s impact in classrooms. The company highlighted new global partnerships, such as Estonia’s AI Leap initiative, and expanded access to tools like Gemini for Education and YouTube’s conversational AI to support students and teachers. Early research from Google’s randomized controlled trials shows that its learning-focused AI model, LearnLM, can improve students’ problem-solving skills and support more effective tutoring. Google.org is also funding organizations like Raspberry Pi Foundation, Fab AI, and Playlab to advance AI literacy, equitable access, and next-generation learning frameworks worldwide. |

2. Ontario, Alberta school boards caught unprepared in mass student data breach: provincial watchdogs
https://www.cbc.ca/news | November 19, 2025
Privacy commissioners in Ontario and Alberta found that school boards were unprepared for the massive PowerSchool data breach that exposed information from about 5.2 million Canadians in December 2024. Their investigations revealed that many boards lacked proper breach response plans, failed to include required privacy and security safeguards in contracts, and did not adequately monitor PowerSchool’s protective measures. Although PowerSchool paid a ransom and strengthened its systems, some school boards were also targeted with additional ransom demands from the attacker. The watchdogs’ reports call for stronger contracts, improved oversight, and clear breach protocols as Canada continues responding to one of its largest education-sector cyberattacks. |

A new partnership between imagi, Lovable, and OpenAI is bringing free AI-powered coding lessons to classrooms through the imagi Edu platform, supported by $1 million in OpenAI credits for schools during Computer Science Education Week. The collaboration introduces “vibe coding,” an intuitive, hands-on approach to AI learning that lets students create prototypes and explore problem-solving with generative tools in a privacy-safe, COPPA-compliant environment. Imagi and Lovable aim to expand global AI literacy, with a goal of reaching 100 million students through ready-to-run lessons, downloadable materials, and teacher training under the Hour of AI initiative. Educators worldwide can access structured, curriculum-aligned resources designed to make AI and computer science instruction more engaging, age-appropriate, and scalable across K–12 and beyond. |
A new study from the University of Calgary highlights how Canadian teachers are experiencing AI in classrooms with both hope and deep concern, revealing a widening gap between policy expectations and day-to-day classroom reality. Teachers reported an assessment crisis, growing equity gaps, and rising pressure to respond to AI while already facing overwhelming workloads and emotional demands. Although many see AI’s potential to reduce administrative burdens and enhance lesson planning, they fear that poorly designed policies could erode professional autonomy, increase burnout, and turn teaching into a standardized checklist rather than a human-centered practice. The study calls for teacher-led, ethical, and equity-driven AI policies, emphasizing that responsible AI integration must start by listening to educators and grounding innovation in the realities of classroom life. |

On National Child Day, Canada’s Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne reaffirmed the need to strengthen privacy protections for children, announcing a joint resolution with provincial and territorial counterparts focused on safeguarding student data in educational technologies. The Commissioner also launched the OPC Youth Council, a diverse group of young Canadians who will advise on digital privacy risks and help guide outreach and policy initiatives. The release highlights ongoing national and international efforts — including new research, investigations into platforms like TikTok, and global privacy sweeps — aimed at addressing risks such as data breaches, profiling, biometric surveillance, and manipulative design targeting youth. With parents and teachers expressing high levels of concern, the OPC is advancing a children’s privacy code, expanding research, and promoting stronger safeguards so young people can safely learn, communicate, and participate online. |

6. B.C. invests $241M in trades training to boost labour & power B.C.’s economic future
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/ | November 14, 2025 |
British Columbia has announced a major $241-million investment to dramatically expand trades training over the next three years, marking the province’s largest increase in skilled-trades funding in nearly two decades. Premier David Eby said the initiative will help British Columbians secure well-paid jobs tied to major upcoming projects in construction, clean energy, mining, and advanced technology, while ensuring industries have the workforce needed to avoid delays. The investment will double the current trades-training budget, increasing apprenticeship seats, reducing waitlists, accelerating certification (starting with crane operators), and improving mobility across trades as labour demands evolve. With nearly 50,000 apprentices already registered and strong support from unions, colleges, and SkilledTradesBC, the province says this historic commitment will strengthen B.C.’s workforce, economy, and long-term capacity to deliver large-scale infrastructure and innovation projects. |

7. Amazon announces the 2026 Amazon Nova AI University Challenge: Trusted Software Agents track
https://www.amazon.science/ | October 31, 2025 |
Amazon has announced the 2026 Amazon Nova AI Challenge, a global university competition focused on building trustworthy, safety-aligned AI agents for real-world software engineering workflows. This year's challenge emphasizes multi-step, agentic development tasks that require teams to balance increasing model utility with strong safeguards, reflecting AI’s evolution from simple code generators to systems that plan, build, and validate entire applications. Ten selected teams will operate as either developer teams strengthening agent reliability or red teams probing systems for vulnerabilities, with evaluations measuring both performance and safety simultaneously. With applications opening November 10, 2025, the competition aims to accelerate research in secure, high-impact AI systems while training the next generation of engineers to build responsible, resilient agentic tools. |
The University of Lethbridge’s Dr. Richelle Marynowski is examining how artificial intelligence can strengthen, not replace, teachers, arguing that AI’s real value lies in reducing workload and supporting better instructional practices. In her upcoming PUBlic Professor Series talk, she notes that while fears of AI taking over classrooms are common, effective use of AI still requires human judgment, oversight, and pedagogical expertise. Marynowski highlights how AI could help combat teacher burnout by handling time-consuming tasks, allowing educators to focus more on students and learning. Drawing on her decades of classroom and research experience, and her role in co-founding an AI startup for teacher support, she emphasizes a future where AI enhances teacher capacity rather than making the profession obsolete. |
