As Hannah Fry noted in her BETT UK keynote, the shift from the industrial age to the AI era is unfolding at 10x the speed, touching nearly every role, system, and skill set. The challenge before us is not whether AI will impact education, but how thoughtfully we lead through it.
Thank you to our community of educators, policymakers, innovators, and partners for continuing to ground innovation in purpose, equity, and human connection. Together, we’re shaping a future where technology amplifies, not replaces, the art of teaching and the science of learning.
Stay curious, stay connected, and as always, keep the learning curve steep.

1. Bett 2026: Celebrating the art of teaching and the science of learning
https://blog.google/ | January 21 2026 |
At Bett 2026, Google emphasized the intersection of the art of teaching and the science of learning, highlighting human connection and research-backed pedagogy. They announced expanded access to Gemini in Workspace for educators and students, alongside new AI tools in Google Classroom and Chrome to enhance teaching, learning, and collaboration. Updates include full-length practice SATs, audio and video feedback, AI-generated media verification, and improved online safety features. Google also partnered with Khan Academy to integrate Gemini models, aiming to support more personalized and engaging learning experiences worldwide. |

The global educational technology market is projected to grow from USD 165 billion in 2026 to USD 375 billion by 2033, driven by rising demand for personalized learning and online education. K-12 education, software solutions, and cloud-based platforms are leading segments, with North America and Asia Pacific emerging as key markets. Growth is supported by AI, AR/VR, gamification, government initiatives, and investments in digital infrastructure, although high costs and the digital divide remain challenges. Major EdTech companies are innovating with AI-powered tools, virtual classrooms, and partnerships to meet evolving educational needs and expand access worldwide. |

Ontario’s Minister of Education is taking action at the Peel District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board in response to serious governance issues and long-term financial instability that threaten student learning. Peel has been placed under immediate provincial supervision, stopping a planned mid-year layoff of 60 teachers that would have disrupted learning for nearly 1,400 students after five consecutive years of deficits. York Catholic has been given 14 days to address concerns around depleted reserves, leadership turnover, and risky financial assumptions or face possible supervision. The actions reflect the province’s broader effort to strengthen accountability and ensure public education funding is focused on student success under the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025. |

At DREAM East Harlem Middle School, teachers integrated an AI-powered teaching assistant to improve student writing and reading comprehension, guiding learners like seventh-grader Jomeilin through assignments step by step. The platform mirrors one-on-one teacher support, highlights group struggles, and saves educators about 50 hours of grading, allowing more time for targeted instruction. Early challenges included overly rigid rubrics and general AI feedback, which were addressed by building flexibility and teacher input into the system. Success stemmed from giving teachers time to master the tools, showing that AI works best when paired with thoughtful, teacher-led planning and support. |

5. Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives: When Learning Changes a Family’s Everyday Life
https://www.ocsb.ca/ | January 22, 2026 |
Students from the Ottawa Catholic School Board, through the Rebuilding Wheels, Rebuilding Lives program at St. Paul Catholic High School, restored a vehicle and donated it to a local family in need. The project, part of the Elite Skilled Trades Academy, gave students hands-on experience while addressing a real community challenge, access to reliable transportation. More than a school assignment, the work emphasized empathy, service, and real-world impact. The initiative was supported by community partners United Way East Ontario and Surgenor Ottawa, strengthening both student learning and family stability. |

6. Mila and Inovia Capital are Partnering to Launch the Venture Scientist Fund, Propelling Canada’s AI Research Excellence into Global Tech Champions
https://mila.quebec/en | January 21, 2026
Mila and Inovia Capital have announced a partnership to launch the Venture Scientist Fund, a USD $100M early-stage venture capital fund aimed at turning Canada’s world-class AI research into globally competitive AI-native companies. Designed to bridge the gap between research and commercialization, the fund will work closely with Canada’s National AI Institutes to engage scientists at the earliest stages of company creation. The initiative plans to invest in more than 55 startups emerging from leading Canadian universities, focusing on areas where deep scientific expertise offers a competitive advantage. By anchoring talent and intellectual property in Canada, the fund seeks to strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem and reinforce its global leadership in artificial intelligence. |

7. ‘It changes everything’: How AI is impacting post-secondary education
https://www.ctvnews.ca/ | January 13, 2026 |
AI is rapidly reshaping post-secondary education, shifting from a perceived threat to academic integrity to a widely adopted tool that supports learning, teaching, and institutional efficiency. Educators say tools like ChatGPT can help students better understand complex topics, improve writing quality, and provide 24/7 tutoring support, while also enabling professors to enhance curriculum design and student outreach. While concerns remain around overreliance, ethics, and academic integrity, universities report a growing acceptance of AI as policies evolve and tools improve in accuracy and reliability. Experts emphasize that despite AI’s impact, the core value of higher education, human connection, collaboration, and critical inquiry, remains essential and unchanged. |
The Ontario government is investing more than $47 million in 195 research projects at universities, colleges, and hospitals across the province to drive innovation, protect jobs, and strengthen economic competitiveness. Delivered through the Ontario Research Fund, the funding supports state-of-the-art research facilities and equipment in key sectors such as agri-food, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, information technology, and critical minerals. The investment includes nearly $1 million for Georgian College to expand its Centre of Industrial Simulation and Prototyping, helping create jobs, support industry partnerships, and train future innovators. Provincial leaders say the initiative will accelerate homegrown discoveries, attract talent, and ensure Ontario remains a top global destination for research and investment. |

9. VR tech to help UNB education students face classrooms
https://www.unb.ca/ | January 23, 2026 |
The University of New Brunswick is piloting a virtual reality program to help education students better prepare for the complexities of real classrooms. Inspired by VR use in nursing education, professors Matt McGuire and Matt Rogers are creating immersive simulations based on real stories from experienced K–12 teachers. The scenarios will allow students to pause, reflect, and discuss decisions in a safe environment, emphasizing judgment and adaptability rather than “right answers.” Designed to supplement, not replace, traditional practicums, the initiative aims to reduce stress for new teachers and strengthen classroom readiness through experiential learning. |

10. 90% of college faculty believe AI is dumbing down students’ critical thinking abilities
https://nypost.com/ | January 23, 2026
A new survey of 1,057 college faculty by the American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon University found widespread concern that AI is harming students’ critical thinking. Ninety percent of faculty believe AI decreases critical thinking, while majorities also report reduced attention spans, increased cheating, and weakened research skills. Many faculty fear AI is undermining academic integrity and the long-term value of college degrees, even as students increasingly rely on the technology. At the same time, faculty say many graduates are still unprepared to use AI effectively in the workforce, highlighting the need for clearer leadership and stronger AI literacy in higher education. |
